Field Visit: Spot Speed and Traffic Volume Study of NH 47, Koradi Road, Nagpur

The Department of Civil Engineering organised a one-day field visit for the B.Tech V Semester students as a skilling activity in Transportation Engineering. The activity, a Spot Speed and Traffic Volume Study, was held on Monday, 12 October 2026, at Bharat Mata Square on NH 47, Koradi Road, Nagpur.

It was planned to give students direct exposure to traffic data collection on a National Highway rather than from textbooks alone, with the objective of providing hands-on experience in field data collection for spot speed and traffic volume studies. A total of 60 students of B.Tech V Semester (Civil Engineering) participated; the activity was coordinated by Mr. Rohit N. Bhosle and Mr. Akash A. Kaley, and the students were accompanied by Mrs. Kusum S. Balani and Dr. Monica Jain.

The students visited the study location, where spot speed data of vehicles was collected at the selected spot on the highway and traffic volume counts were carried out to record the flow of vehicles. The staff members explained the procedure, the precautions needed for roadside data collection, and how the field data is recorded and processed. Through this activity, students are expected to be able to collect, analyse and interpret traffic speed and volume data, which will be used in their Micro Projects and Projects and will help them relate classroom concepts of traffic engineering, such as speed characteristics and traffic flow, to actual road conditions. The field visit thus gave students practical experience of a real traffic study and strengthened their skills in field data collection and analysis.
