The Evergreen Branch From the day the stone age man chiseled his first tool, the fold of mechanical engineering has come a long way. Today apart from the core areas like the automobile industry, mining, aerospace engineering and maternal sciences a mechanical engineering finds his utility in areas such as the IT industry and the banking sectors. Mechanical engineering is based on the various principles of mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and energy. Mechanical engineers use the core principles as WEii as other knowledge in the field to design and analyze, manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, motor vehicles, aircraft, robots and more. The scope for a mechanical engineer in any part of the world 5 unlimited. Mechanical engineers are the second highest employed engineers among all others with only 7% unemployed whereas any normal engineering stream would have around 15% unemployed engineers worldwide. Stressing on Innovation

By A.D. Pachchhoo HOD In India we are experimenting tremendous expansion in 'Technical education' in the last few years as a part of global requirement. Mechanical engineering is one of the core branches in these institutes which have its own importance. Whether the economy is booming, passing through recession, opportunities for mechanical engineers are not going to get much affected. On the contrary recession is proving to be a great opportunity for those who are innovative and having the ability to implement innovative ideas. India has a great potential to become the engineering and R&D hub of the world. To encase the opportunities in this environment calls for understanding the needs of today's industry. Earlier 'Operate and Maintain used to be the mantra for manufacturing. Now 'Innovate afi Improve' is the new dimension added to this. Similarly 'Productivity' used to be the only parameter Cohn addressed by mechanical engineers. Now skill of a techno- commercial feasibility evaluation needs to be acquired by mechanical engineers.
