Alumnus makes the Institute & City Proud

It is a moment of delight for the Techpallottines, as Mr. Nirul Masurkar, alumnus of the Electrical Engineering Department, 2009 batch, brought laurels, both to the institute and city at a global level.

Mr. Masurkar, PhD Scholar, alongwith a group of students came up with an innovative project titled ‘Smart Buoy’, that helps in real-time detection of water contaminants. The conventional water contamination test is a time consuming process, while theirs is an autonomous system with sensors designed based on nano-materials, high power biodegradable Li-ion batteries and communication network. The batteries are charged from solar panels installed with the sensor unit. The real time water contamination sensors are capable of communicating with several sensors installed in lakes or rivers.

Their project won the first prize at various global competitions, where top universities and renowned industries from all over the world participated. The events were judged by experts from NASA and national labs across USA. An overall prize worth USD 65,000 was won by them. Mr. Masurkar is co-founder of the start-up MicroBuoy Inc., in USA, along with two others.
