Guest Lecture on Plagiarism in Engineering

A Guest Lecture on ‘Plagiarism in Engineering & how it is hampering India’s Innovations’ was delivered by Mr. Nikit Shah (Director, Shah Overseas Edu., Nagpur). This was held on 12th March 2018, by the Electrical Engg. Dept., under the banner of ISTE Student Chapter. More than 300 students of the 4th & 6th sem (EE, ETC, IT, CE & ME Branch) & ISTE Faculty members took part in this guest lecture.

Mr. Shah addressed the issue about rise of plagiarism and research misconduct in India. He briefly explained that India does not have a statutory body to deal with scientific misconduct in academia, like the Office of Research Integrity in the US, and hence cases of plagiarism are often dealt in ad-hoc fashion with different routes being followed in different cases. While there are now regulations mandating that all institutions must check for plagiarism, a revision of academic culture is still needed. The ability to write original content is extremely important. But it seems to be getting harder, simply because taking matter from online sources does not directly translate to one gaining knowledge. One needs to really absorb what one is reading so as to understand it fully. He then elucidated the need of student’s thesis for a particular subject which should be scrutinized properly. Mr. Shah also suggested ways to lessen it by encouraging writing skills in students, evolving a strong local code of conduct that should be repeatedly communicated.

At the end, Mr. Shah was felicitated with a memento. The lecture was coordinated by ISTE Faculty Advisor Prof. Kushal Kanhav & ISTE Department Co-ordinator Prof. Y. D. Nagdeve.
